White noise vs noise cancelling: which actually blocks sound?

The short answer: they solve different problems. Noise cancelling (ANC) uses headphones to electronically silence steady drone - a plane engine, a fan, an AC hum. White noise does the opposite: it adds a gentle, even sound from any speaker so sudden noises - voices, doors, a dog - stand out less. For sleep and unpredictable sounds, white noise usually wins; for a noisy commute with headphones on, cancelling wins.

What each one actually does

Active noise cancelling (ANC) lives in headphones or earbuds. Tiny microphones listen to steady, low sound around you - a plane engine, an AC hum, a fan - and the electronics play an inverse wave that cancels it. It is very good at constant, low-frequency drone, weaker on sudden or high sounds, and it only works while you wear the headphones.

White noise does the opposite. Instead of removing sound, it adds a soft, even sound across all frequencies from any speaker or phone. That raises the floor of quiet in a room so sudden noises - a voice, a door, a barking dog - stand out far less. This is called masking, and it needs no headphones.

Choose noise cancelling when…

You are commuting, flying, or in an open office with headphones on and want to kill a constant drone.

Choose white noise when…

You are sleeping, settling a baby, dealing with thin walls, or cannot wear headphones - and need to soften sudden, unpredictable sounds.

For sleep, they are not the same

You cannot comfortably sleep in ANC headphones all night, and cancelling does little against the sounds that actually wake you - a snoring partner, traffic, a baby startle. White noise runs all night from a phone or speaker and masks exactly those. Many people cancel drone by day and mask with white noise at night.

Can you use both?

Yes. ANC headphones plus a white-noise track playing inside them is a strong combination: the headphones cancel the steady engine drone, and the white noise masks the voices and clatter that cancelling misses.

Mask the noise, no headphones needed

Noizim plays white, brown and pink noise from your phone or a speaker - all night, with a drift-off timer. Free to try.

Frequently asked

No - it masks it. White noise does not remove other sounds; it adds a steady, even sound so sudden noises are less noticeable. Active noise cancelling (ANC) is the one that electronically reduces steady low-frequency drone, and it needs headphones.

White noise, for most people. You can run it all night from a phone or speaker without wearing anything, and it masks the sudden sounds - snoring, traffic, a baby startle - that ANC headphones handle poorly.

It can make them much less noticeable by reducing the contrast with a silent room. It will not erase them, but many people find voices and snoring far easier to sleep through with steady masking.
